How Workshops are Helping Men Get Connected: Pemberton's Men's Sheds

Pemberton Men's Shed, established six years ago in Pemberton, British Columbia, is an initiative aimed at reducing loneliness and social isolation among elderly men in rural areas. Originating from the Men's Shed movement that began in Australia in the 1990s, the concept has expanded globally to over 12 countries, addressing the unique social needs of retired men. The Pemberton group started as a tools library with the Men's Shed philosophy in mind, offering a space where men could gather, share skills, and engage in communal activities.

The organization provides a variety of social and recreational opportunities, including "brown-bag" lunches, fishing trips, skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, golfing, and collaborative construction projects. These activities foster camaraderie and meaningful connections, allowing members to work "shoulder-to-shoulder" and support one another. The group emphasizes the importance of building friendships and alleviating the loneliness that often accompanies retirement.

Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, which limited in-person gatherings, Pemberton Men's Shed secured grants from the United Way and government programs to upgrade their facilities. They renovated a double trailer previously used by senior women for exercise, transforming it into a fully equipped workshop. This new permanent home, located at 7420 Flint Street, will officially open on May 4, with local dignitaries and representatives from the B.C. and Canadian Men's Shed associations in attendance.

With a current membership of about 17 men, the organization hopes to expand its reach following the workshop's opening. The upgraded facility will enable the group to undertake more community projects, such as building birdhouse kits for children on Canada Day—a successful initiative they have conducted in previous years. By involving members in purposeful activities that benefit the wider community, the Men's Shed enhances participants' sense of belonging and contribution.

Pemberton Men's Shed serves as an effective model for combating loneliness and social isolation among elderly men in rural settings. By providing a supportive environment for social interaction, skill-sharing, and community involvement, the organization improves the well-being of its members and fosters stronger community ties.
