In today's fast-paced, digital world, genuine human interaction often takes a backseat, leading to increased feelings of loneliness and social isolation. To address this growing challenge, the "Meet a Stranger" project was established in Victoria, British Columbia, offering a unique way to reconnect individuals through the simple act of conversation. What began as a personal endeavor, involving one-hour dialogues with different strangers, soon evolved into a community event as the profound impact of these interactions became clear. The project now runs as a monthly event, inviting adults from all walks of life to participate in a shared human experience through face-to-face dialogue.

Upon arriving at a "Meet a Stranger" event, participants are randomly paired, encouraging conversations between people who might not ordinarily cross paths in daily life. Each pair engages in a one-hour, uninterrupted conversation, giving them ample time to explore meaningful topics. For those who may feel nervous or uncertain about starting a conversation, prompts are provided to help facilitate dialogue. The events are designed to be inclusive, offering a welcoming environment for both introverts and extroverts, with a focus on respect, open-mindedness, and empathy.

The initiative aims to reduce social isolation by offering real-world interactions, fostering a sense of belonging, and building community. By engaging with people from different backgrounds, participants gain new perspectives and deepen their understanding of others. The project strengthens community ties by creating spaces for deeper connections beyond superficial exchanges.

Supported by the City of Victoria and the Fairfield Gonzales Community Association, "Meet a Stranger" events are held every third Saturday of the month, with the goal of continuing to provide valuable opportunities for connection and fostering a stronger, more connected community.
